Polish scientist discovered organisms without mitochondria – Polish Radio

Previously, scientists believed that the domain cellular organisms, which include man, animals and plants – such organisms is not.

Our bodies produce energy in the presence of oxygen so called mitochondria in a cell serving the role of a power plant. It turned out, however, that mitochondria are not essential for life.

Single-cell organisms from the group Monocercomonoides, live in the gastrointestinal tract chinchillas, where there is no oxygen, and yet do well. Discoverer, Dr. Anna Karnkowska from Warsaw University, explains that gained independence from oxygen and generate energy differently. It happened in a long process of evolution.

Scientists compare this case with the situation, when the country’s economy abutting on nuclear power is running out of uranium, prompting it to produce renewable energy.

creation is described first teaching known eukaryote – cellular organism – which do not have mitochondria.

The publication Polish scientist publishes the magazine “Current Biology”.
