FBI broke the iPhone without support from Apple. Why it is not entirely a bad thing – Gazeta.pl

FBI withdrawing the case from the court said that they were able to gain access to the said iPhone with the help of an external company. Therefore, the continuation of the case in court does not make much sense. We do not know who helped the FBI in breaking the iPhone, or the method used to accomplish this.

Why is this message paradoxically good? Because in no way we could predict which side in this conflict stanąłby court. In the game, there were two sets of values: safety from terrorism versus freedom and civil liberties . Possible winnings FBI could open a veritable Pandora’s box. The order not only to create a back door to the iOS, but even pass the code in the hands of government could mean virtually the end of the privacy of millions of users of Apple products and not just in the US but also around the world.

This does not mean, however, that the withdrawal of the lawsuit by the FBI ends the matter. It requires no doubt a clear regulation. Dismissal of the lawsuit gives both parties more time to prepare for the final settlement. Perhaps it will not happen at the court room, but in Congress, after a long lobbying effort. Also neutralize the emotional context of the case, and so the drama of the victims of the shooting should allow cooler look at this matter in the future.

However, FBI can actually congratulate ourselves . Because not only did they ultimately compromise the security of the iPhone, but also to avoid the judicial battles, during which the agency would have to convince the court and the Americans that their safety is more important than their privacy. In addition, the FBI has in hand a tool to crack iOS and without the need to complications in to Apple. So it can do “silently”.

In the confusion most affected is ultimately Apple. First of all, the company lost the possibility of legal protection against government encroachment on the integrity of their software. Moreover, fracture iOS by the FBI, the hands of an unknown company confronts Cook series of questions: how is it done, what version of iOS is exposed and how secure the system in the future? Because, clearly, iOS is not as secure as it praises Apple.

Breaking iPhone did not cause reaction of markets (a slight decline in Apple’s stock on March 28, today already they are going up), but both customers and investors will want to clear in the coming days to confirm that iOS is safe. For now, Apple released only a brief statement:

[...] will further enhance the safety of our products, especially when the threats and attacks on our data are becoming more frequent and more sophisticated. Apple strongly believes that both people in the United States and around the world have a right to protection, privacy and security of their data. Sacrificing one to another only issue the people and the state a great danger [...]

However, a set of standard hasełek not help Apple in what they are currently waiting for: hard work to find gaps and to prove to customers that they can sleep peacefully.
