Facebook explains why launched a safety report for Paris, and not for Beirut – Gazeta.pl

Shortly after the attacks in Paris, many people whose friends lived in the city got on Facebook about whether they are safe. Yes tripped System Safety Reports – the mechanism starts a year ago. Its purpose is to inform your friends about this, what is the fate of a man who is in the danger zone. Whether and where it will run the system decides on Facebook.

But the whole action was met with considerable criticism. Although the concept of safety reports is very good, many people were outraged that the system was launched after the attacks in Paris and not entered a day earlier when a bomb exploded in Beirut.

Facebook matter treated seriously, because of Mark Zuckerberg hurried explanation. Written on your profile

Many people rightly asked why we included Safety Reports for Paris, not been turning on after the bombing in Beirut or elsewhere. Until yesterday, our principle is to activate the reports only in the case of natural disasters. That’s what changed and now we intend to incorporate Reports also for other disasters.
It is true that there are many other important conflicts in the world. We care about all people equally, and we have worked hard to help people in so many similar situations as possible.

also spoke of Alex Schultz, director of the development of Facebook. He said:

In the course of this complex, confusing situation affecting many people Facebook has become a place where shared, information and tried to know the fate of loved ones. We talked with our employees on the spot, events, who stated that they believe should do something more. That is why we have decided that we will do something you have not tried – run security reports in the case other than a natural disaster. There is always a first time, even in complex and delicate situations. For us it was Paris.

While Zuckerberg is primarily explained that – contrary to the impressions of many people – previously in such situations does not start the special scheme, whereas translation Schultz shows that perhaps to a large extent, these were just about the movement on Facebook, which generated both events. The percentage of people using in both countries of Facebook is similar (according to data from 2012 was the same – 38%), but Lebanon has more than 16 times less inhabitants. It may also a question of mentality, habits or simply the number of mobile users, who are in these situations are most active.

Facebook has now a tough nut to crack – the decision about which tragedy is important enough to enable her system safety reports will certainly be aroused much controversy.
