How many goats living in the Tatras? The latest results – Tatra Portal

For us spring counting chamois. The share of young people this year in the general population bodes well for the species in the Tatras.

Spring counting goats held on 17 of June. The weather was bad, cold blustery wind was blowing. On the northern slopes above 2,000 meters above sea level grass were covered with frost. Under these conditions it was difficult to conduct observations, and even chamois reluctantly remained in the open, where they are easier to observe, and rather sought peaceful refuge. Despite the unfavorable conditions on the Polish side reported 284 chamois, including 33 Caps, 109 goats, 45 kids this year, 34 kids last year, 56 adults were not recognized as gender, two young unspecified recognized as the age and 2 individuals completely unrecognized as gender and age. On the Slovak side were 823 chamois, including 95 kids to one year. For all the Tatra adopted a combined score counting in the amount of 1,107 goats, including 140 for one year. A large proportion of individuals counted was in the area of the state border, and include them in the goats, “Polish” or “Slovak” is a matter of convention.

In comparison with the previous record results this time counts observed a slightly smaller number of goats, which had expect in such adverse weather conditions. It must be remembered, however, that spring counting goats are not intended to determine the exact number of these animals, evaluation of reproduction. The share of young people for the whole of this year amounting to 13% of the population Tatra is a good sign for the future. On the Polish side, this share was 16%, which is not necessarily proof of better reproduction, but it may be the result of more accurate diagnosis. On the Polish side in action was attended by 56 people. In Slovakia, the observers were two and a half more, but they had to be checked four times larger area.
