Samsung announced that started the mass production new NVMe SSD media, called SM951-NVMe, M.2 format. Samsung SM951 supports AHCI in the form of using PCI Express 3.0 has been since the beginning of the year.
The new media SM951-NVMe achieves much higher speed data transfer. According to the manufacturer the maximum throughput when reading is 2.26 GB / s, while saving up to 1.6 GB / s. Samsung’s latest product is far ahead of the fastest SSD M.2, which now reach up to 540/500 MB / s. SM951-NVMe its high performance is achieved by using four 8-Gbps signal lines PCI Express 3.0 x4. The maximum theoretical bandwidth thus extends 32 Gb / s, and the data transfer rate of 4 GB / s. This is a significant step forward in relation to the SSD-based UI M.2, which is a peak performance of 600 MB / s.
When it comes to random read data, the SM951-NVMe reaches up to 300,000 IOPS, and therefore twice more than its counterpart AHCI (130,000 IOPS) and three times more than a typical SSD Serial ATA (97,000 IOPS). By using the format M.2, the thickness of the carrier does not exceed 4 mm (exact thickness is 3.73 mm with the arrangements on both sides of the laminate). The whole weighs only 7 grams, and so the average SSD 2.5-inch format is just ten times heavier. We already know that Samsung has started the production of models and capacities of 128, 256 and 512 GB.
It is worth noting, too, that Samsung SM951 medium-NMVe applied L1.2 power saving mode in which it is possible to disable all high connectivity completely when the computer goes into sleep mode, in accordance with the PCI-SIG. Use of energy saving mode L1.2 makes SM951-NVMe can achieve power consumption of only 2 mW, while the most popular media today SSD L1 mode power consumption could fall to the level of about 50 mW. The difference is so gigantic.
Samsung has already announced that the future is going to SSD media NVMe systems use the latest generation of 3D V-NAND, making it possible to obtain even better performance and higher capacity. Although the manufacturer has not produced the announced prices SM951-NVMe media, but the model with a capacity of 512 GB already started to appear in some stores, priced at around $ 500 a piece. In Europe, models 128, 256 and 512 GB or you can already see, respectively, for about 140, 270 and 480 euros.
