Soyuz TMA-16M docked to the International Space Station – Onet.pl

On board the Soyuz flew Russian Gennady Padalka, who will be at the station for six months. But Scott Kelly of NASA and other Russian – Mikhail Kornienko – will live on it for a year. There will be a kind of guinea pigs: because scientists want to study how the human body will tolerate such a long stay in the state nieważkości.- Once, when I do not know, people will eventually fly to Mars. And we see how with such long flights in the absence of gravity What about the loss of muscle and bone, is not without influence radiation and recently blurred vision – explains Scott Kelly.

Under the conditions of weightlessness human bones weaken muscles, like the body’s immune system. Fluids tend to accumulate in the head, which puts additional pressure on the brain and eyes. Emotional problems also arise. Approx. year stay in orbit will enable doctors to determine whether these symptoms worsen or after reaching a peak slowly subside. Body astronauts will be tested in seven different ways, it inter alia heartbeat, atherosclerosis, a simple form of physical and mental, and even human-friendly microbes that live inside the body.

This is the first attempt of the American space agency NASA achieve such a long space flight. Earlier, more than a year in orbit spent four Russians on board the now-defunct Mir station. Record length of stay in space (14 months) is now the Valery Poljakows, which established him in 1994-95.

The ISS are now Terry W. Virts American, a Russian and an Italian Anton Szkaplerow Samantha Cristoforetti.
