Anna Atkins – who was the first photographer? – Onet.pl

Anna Atkins was born exactly 216 years ago, in 1799 as the daughter of an English scholar John George Children. Received education, of which the women of that time could only dream of. Perhaps his father, who he cared about her upbringing (mother Anna Atkins died in childbirth), we owe her a unique publication.

Atkins has gained a reputation good illustrator. She was the author of more than 250 prints to the English edition of the works of Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck “Genera of Shells”. As a 26-year-old married scientist John Pelly Atkins and took up studies bilogicznymi. Led herbaria, was also a member of the Botanical Society of London. It is mainly interested in the algae. But it is not drawing or botany meant that wrote its own significant history card.

Anna Atkins – a pioneer of photography

When a friend of the family of Anna Lord – John Herschel, invented a method calling photographs (called cyjanotypem), botanist decided to use it. And so, the first publication illustrated with photos only. Pioneering book by Anna Atkins, devoted to algae and bear their monochrmatycznymi photographs survived to this day and is valued by collectors rare.
