Philae landed, or the night of the comet – Interia

World XXI century dissolved extremely us, made us virtually nothing is no longer surprising. He convinced us that anything is possible, talk on the phone without a wire, watching films from the cloud, like to show others what we ate for breakfast, the policy makes no sense and honor, and, yes … the invasion of green men. Is that against the distant mission sampler sized machine that has just landed on the comet’s nucleus, can still excite us?

I’d like to think so, because the mission Rosetta and Philae lander to the comet 67P / Churiumov-Gerasimenko as little as, shows us people in the best possible way, curious, hungry for knowledge and fiendishly clever, and for that yet capable of true collaboration and patient, are able to engage in projects that can bring fruits only after many years. It shows that it is worthwhile to learn, it is worth to mathematics, it is worth to learn foreign languages and programming languages.

If something has to inspire us, to show our children that actually worth reaching for the stars, it is events such as this, when suddenly a while someone’s political PR, a new wife, the pictures on the “wall”, or pants that are not filed, they become less important or completely irrelevant. Exactly as they deserve. It’s that for a moment it all comes back, let even one, maybe two “nights comet”.

honestly admit that many years ago I was thinking about studying astronomy. For technical sciences I would not fit, probes, nor any thing that it consists of, I would not have built. But counting trajectory microlensing observations or analysis of data from the Mars rovers that I probably liked. The problem is that when I chose physics because it seemed to me that in astronomy virtually everything has already been discovered. Yes, I admit how much time I was wrong. And a little embarrassed. And even more than a little. Ok, physicists can also engage in research after the universe, is not it? The fact that so much that I then I realized that in Poland after ’89 just journalism is a mission that should be addressed. You say you made a mistake here even more than with the astronomy? Looks like it. But perhaps all is not lost. They are at the end of such moments as this, through the washing machine, which is somewhere far away perched on a dirty snowball.

With this snow ball is obviously not true, but it sounded so good that I could not resist. Observation of comet 67P nucleus showed that the expected ice on its surface can not be seen, and it looks like a pile of rubble and rubble exactly two connected in the shape of a rubber duck. Is under what looks like sand and stones is actually snow or ice we have to convince the MUPUS an instrument, built by Polish scientists and engineers from the Space Research Centre. MUPUS-hour of truth and strikes on Thursday night, when the camera is ready to work.

Now the end is not yet known, as the landing of Philae was exactly. Poll schedule sent a confirmation tone that was on the surface, but contrary to initial reports in, not ignited two harpoons that had it affixed to the surface. Does this mean that bounced and – perhaps – flipped? Is landed twice? Are you sure you did not fall on his back? If this happens, some devices, including MUPUS-and will not start.

The answers to these questions will never know it for several hours, but the Rosetta mission, which was invented over 20 years ago and was built in the early twenty-first century, was a great success in August of this year, when the vehicle caught up with the kernel comets and began to circle around him. Until then, Rosetta has already sent a lot of information, and because the comet will be accompanied by closer and closer to the Sun, we can expect a truly revolutionary news. Philae probe landing on the surface of the comet’s nucleus is the icing on the cake, but … it would be nice cherry consume these and find out how this “kind of dirty snow ball” looks like up close.

Even for a moment, we can keep our fingers crossed for the success of this pioneering mission, let’s enjoy the “night of the comet” for a while before we get back to the mundane everyday life, things very important and quite unimportant, not having anything to do with the stars .
