new species of giant predator lived 98 million years ago, scientists discovered in North America.

This is one of the largest predatory dinosaurs known from this region of the world – emphasize the explorer. In his time Siats meekerorum was at the end of the food chain. Only when he disappeared, his ancestors got a chance later killers of all time – Tyrannosaurus rex.

– It’s been a whole 63 years since he has been identified in North America predator of this size – has a Lindsay Zanno from the University of North Carolina. – You can imagine how excited we were when we saw this giant bones sticking out of the ground.

An individual whose remains could be found in Utah had over 9 meters in length and weighed probably more than 4 tons. Researchers believe that it was a young animal. Adult Siats meekerorum was definitely bigger. According to the researchers probably reached sizes discovered earlier akrokantozaura – more than 10 meters long and 6 tons of weight. It is this species was discovered in 1950 and previously thought to be the largest “American” predator of the time. Akrokantozaury, according to the researchers, lived in the same neighborhoods, but 10 million years ago.

Siats fills a gap covering about 30 million years between the rule of akrokantozaurów and other similar creatures, and the emergence of tyronazaurów. 98 million years ago the ancestors of tyrannosaurs were smaller animals than Siats meekerorum. – The large difference in size suggests that tyrannosaurs were kept in check by this species – said Peter Makovicky of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. – The then tyrannosaurs were small concern for these giants, a bit like hyenas for the lion. Only when Siats left the stage, developed the largest land carnivores of all time.

Tyrannosaurus rex appeared about 30 million years later. But there was more than Siats – can measure more than 12 meters in length and weigh more than 6 tons.

Scientists predict further information about the findings. – Where to find this species is more surprises – says Zanno. – We have a lot to tell, we discovered, among others, the following two previously unknown species of dinosaur – adds Makovicky.
