According to doctors, the discovery may hold the key to treating common injuries of this complex joint. Front ligament has the aim to protect the knee during twisting movements and changes of direction.

Orthopedists

hypothesize that in most cases the damage to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) – which is a common injury, especially among skiers – there is also a violation or breach of the newly discovered anterior ligament (ALL). This would explain why a large part of ACL reconstruction surgery did not produce the desired results and the knee is unstable.

first mention of the anterior ligament appeared in 1879, in the work of the French surgeon Paul Segond, research on the part of the knee, however, have not developed since then. Now the Belgian Orthopaedics, University Hospital of Leuven, Dr. Steven Claes and prof. Johan Bellemans, accurately described the anatomy – it connects the outer part of the femur with the tibia.
He said British surgeon Joel Melton – in the past we had a vague idea that something is happening in this part of the knee, this discovery has given us in the end a better understanding of what’s going on.
